Registration starts Jan. 21, 2025, for Camp Claphans, a summer camp in Norman for kids with disabilities.
The camp is open to kids 8 to 20 and is an outreach program of the J.D. McCarty Center for children with developmental disabilities.
The camp offers spring, summer and fall sessions.
Six camp sessions are offered in the summer, and the sessions are from Sunday afternoon to Wednesday afternoon.
The spring and fall camps are from Friday through Sunday.
The camp is located on the center's campus at 2002 E. Robinson St. and features two cabins and an activities building that are located next to an 11-acre lake.
Activities for campers include archery, arts and crafts, canoeing, fishing, horseback riding, talent shows and swimming.
Camp Claphans also features a 1-to-1 staff to camper ratio, a registered dietitian to address dietary needs for campers and a physician and nurses available to assist with medical needs.
Camp staff members are typically university students who are working toward a degree in allied health-care fields, such as physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech-language pathology; special and general education; outdoor recreation; nutrition and other related fields.

The camp, which opened in 2013, serves kids from across Oklahoma. The camp is named in honor of Sammy Jack Claphan, a citizen of the Cherokee Nation and an Oklahoma native. Claphan was a former University of Oklahoma and NFL football player who later became a special education teacher in Oklahoma.
