Volunteer Application Process:

The process to become a volunteer at the McCarty Center is as follows:

1) Complete a volunteer application form. An application and volunteer handbook may be picked up at the reception desk at the hospital Monday thru Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. or by downloading to your computer the Volunteer Application link above. Read the handbook and sign and date the last page of the handbook. Then contact Jennifer to schedule an interview.

2) Individual volunteers who will be working in departments where they may be working directly or indirectly with patients will undergo a criminal background check before starting their volunteer duties. This takes up to two weeks to be completed.

3) You will need to have a TB skin test and bring the results with your application. You can get a TB skin test from your family physician or, if you’re an OU student, from the Goddard Health Center. This process takes 3-days from the time you get your injection until you have to go back and have the injection site read. TB skin tests have to re-newed annually.

4) You will need a copy of your shot records to be submitted with your volunteer application form. The shot record must include vaccinations for the following:

  1. 2 MMR
  2. 2 Chicken pox or Chicken pox disease (documentation from physician or parent with the date of disease)
  3. 1 Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis)

These vaccinations must be completed before any volunteer work starts.

5) You will need to complete an on-line HIPAA orientation. HIPAA is the federal patient privacy act. You can do the orientation here at the hospital. The HIPAA orientation takes approximately 2 hours.

6) Once these first 5 items are completed, you will meet with the volunteer coordinator for the completion of your orientation and volunteer assignment. At this time you should have your completed application form, your signed volunteer handbook, the results of your TB skin test, your shot records and your certificate of completion of the HIPAA orientation ready to submit to the volunteer coordinator. Once this is completed you will setup your volunteer schedule.
