Registration open for Camp ClapHans

Registration is now open for the 2022 sessions at Camp ClapHans, a summer camp in Norman for kids with disabilities.
The camp is open to kids ages 8 to 20 and is an outreach program of the J.D. McCarty Center for children with developmental disabilities.
Camp Director Bobbie Hunter said plans are to offer the same camp schedule as in years' past but "due to constant changes in circumstances involving COVID-19 and other factors that could affect our summer sessions, we have not scheduled specific dates for camp. We'll know more in the upcoming months," Hunter said.
"In the meantime, we are asking families to complete an application so we can determine the number of campers for this summer,” she said.
The cost to attend camp is $325, and scholarships are available to families who qualify. Camp features five sessions in the summer with the sessions taking place from Sunday afternoon to Wednesday afternoon.
The camp is located on the McCarty Center's campus at 2002 E. Robinson St. in Norman and features two cabins and an activities building that are located next to an 11-acre lake.
Activities for campers include archery, arts and crafts, canoeing, fishing, horseback riding, talent shows and swimming.
Hunter said the camp offers exciting programs and the opportunity for kids to challenge themselves through new activities.
Camp ClapHans also features a 1-to-1 staff to camper ratio, dietary staff to address dietary needs for campers and a physician and nurses available to assist with medical needs.
Camp staff members are typically university students who are working toward a degree in allied health-care fields, such as physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech-language pathology; special and general education; outdoor recreation; nutrition and other related fields.
The camp, which opened in 2013, serves kids from across the state and can accommodate 60 campers each summer.
